On y est. Le meilleur moment de basket de l’année. Les play-offs. Et si malheureusement, on n’y verra pas (pas encore, mais ça ne saurait tarder) l’ovni Wemby, cette édition 2024 a tout pour être mémorable. Entre l’Ouest où toutes les équipes semblent plus fortes les unes que les autres, et l’Est où les Celtics ont dominé de la tête et des épaules la saison régulière et s’avancent en mastodonte, l’excitation est à son comble. 16 équipes. Il n’y aura qu’un champion. Et si on passait chacune d’elles au crible ?

Partons d’abord à la conquête de l’Ouest.

Denver Nuggets (2ème de la saison régulière, vs Lakers Round 1)

Tout en haut de la montagne, à un mile d’altitude, il y a Denver. Impossible de ne pas commencer cette liste par les Nuggets, qui pourraient bien ne faire qu’une bouchée de leurs adversaires. Les hommes de Michael Malone sont champions en titre et ont plus d’un atout dans leur manche. Emmenés par le Joker, double MVP, passeur exceptionnel, joueur inarrêtable, les Denver Nuggets comptent en plus de Nikola Jokić dans leur arsenal du 5 majeur Jamal Murray, KCP et Michael Porter Jr sans oublier Aaron Gordon…de quoi faire peur.  Un collectif léché, des individualités capables de briller à tout moment, l’expérience d’avoir déjà effectué l’ascension, un coach excellent… sans oublier le banc qui leur permet de faire des choses différemment (et au public de se régaler de l’intensité et des posters de Christian Braun).

A l’Ouest, eux préféreraient rien de nouveau. Alors, en route pour un repeat ?

Oklahoma City Thunder (1er  de la saison régulière, vs Kings ou Pelicans Round 1)

Le tonnerre gronde, la foudre tombe, et jamais deux fois au même endroit répondrait à cela l’Oklahoma City Thunder. Une équipe collective, bien construite et bien gérée, avec de nombreux atouts pour le futur, on se doutait donc bien qu’OKC allait monter en puissance. Monter en puissance ils l’ont fait, puisqu’ils ont même fini premier. Oui premier. Devant Denver, Minnesota et toutes les autres franchises aux groupes bien plus expérimentés. Mais a-t-on vraiment besoin d’expérience quand on a le talent de SGA, candidat au MVP cette année, Chet Holmgren, qui finira deuxième derrière l’extraterrestre Wemby au rang de meilleur rookie et autres Jaylen Williams et Cie. Pour finir premier de la saison régulière, c’est apparemment bien plus que suffisant. Et pour les play-offs ? Cela semble plus compliqué, mais on n’en serait pas vraiment surpris. Et si ce n’est pas pour cette année…Disons que vu le niveau actuel de l’équipe et de ce qui se prépare dans l’avenir, il se murmure un mot, chuchoté avec appréhension par les autres franchises… vous avez dit « Dynastie ? »

Minnesota Timberwolves (3ème de la saison régulière, vs Suns Round 1)

A Minnesota, les loups ont faim. A l’image d’un Anthony Edwards qui nous régale tous les soirs par sa joie de jouer, son désir de victoire et ses highlights plus choquants les uns que les autres, ou de Rudy Gobert, qui finira meilleur joueur défensif de l’année et domine la raquette. Le repas est servi. Karl-Anthony Towns a fini de panser ses plaies et Naz Reid pourrait bien être 6ème homme de l’année. Voilà pour la remise des trophées individuels. Les loups chassent en meute, et ils ont sentis l’odeur du sang. Si le Thunder a tout le temps pour aller chercher un titre dans les prochaines années, pour cette version de Minnesota, il se pourrait bien que le moment soit maintenant…ou jamais. Timber. A l’heure de soulever des montagnes ou d’abattre l’arbre qui cache la forêt, la franchise est à la croisée des chemins, l’oubli ou le succès. Mauvaise nouvelle pour eux, l’équipe est formidable, mais est-elle supérieure aux Denver Nuggets ou même au Thunder ?  C’est seulement l’avis de l’auteur de ses lignes mais les Timberwolves semblent un ton au-dessous de ces deux-là. Un outsider dans le far-west ? Oui, un vraiment sérieux qui a les crocs…mais ce n’est pas la seule fine gâchette de la région.

Los Angeles Clippers (4ème de la saison régulière, vs Mavericks Round 1)

Les vieux briscards de l’Ouest. Kawhi Leonard, Paul George, James Harden. Russel Westbrook en sortie de banc. Ces noms doivent vous être familiers. Sinon, voici leurs accolades : deux fois champion, deux fois MVP des finales pour le premier, 9 fois NBA All Star pour le second, le troisième était MVP de la saison en 2018, et le quatrième avait remporté cette même distinction la saison d’avant. En résumé, beaucoup d’expérience, un océan de talent. Les hommes de Tyronn Lue seraient immenses favoris…s’ils avaient quelques années de moins. Nul ne doute de ce qu’ils sont capables de produire sur le court. En revanche, quant à garder leurs joueurs les plus importants sur le parquet en bonne santé…la question mérite d’être posée. Au maximum de leurs capacités, les LA Clippers peuvent battre n’importe quelle équipe et on aurait tort de sous-estimer les vieux flibustiers. Mais combien de fois seront-ils au maximum de leurs capacités durant cette campagne de play-offs ? Nul ne le sait, et pour eux bien plus que tous les autres, c’est la clé du succès.

Dallas Mavericks (5ème de la saison régulière, vs Clippers Round 1)

La classe à Dallas, la baraka à Luka, la magie à Kyrie.  

L’année dernière, personne n’y croyait et ça n’a pas marché. Cette année, il semblerait que la symbiose ait été trouvée. Alors bon courage pour les arrêter. S’il y a de nombreux joueurs très doués offensivement dans la ligue, peut-on faire mieux dans le domaine que le tandem Luka Dončić-Kyrie Irving ? Sans doute pas, et les Mavericks comptent bien créer le chaos et renverser l’ordre établi.  On ne voudrait pas résumer une équipe à deux individualités mais quand on sait de quoi est capable ce duo infernal, le reste relève presque du détail. Préparez-vous à voir les défenses adverses se casser la tête, faire de leur mieux, tout donner pour finalement voir le ballon s’enrouler dans l’intérieur du filet, et se demander alors… « Mais…Luka a vraiment pris ce tir contesté ? Mais…Il a vraiment mis ce tir contesté ! Ce n’est pas comme ça que c’est censé marcher ! ». En plus de mettre la balle dans le panier, ne vous en faites pas pour eux, ils savent aussi la passer et dans les moments importants, ce n’est pas eux qui vont trembler ou se cacher.

 Maintenant, il va falloir performer et répéter les exploits, match après match. La question est : si Luka ou Kyrie ont un mauvais (ou moins bon) jour, qui d’autre dans cet effectif va prendre ses responsabilités et les sauver ? C’est sans doute bien pour cela qu’ils sont limités.

Phoenix Suns (6ème, vs Timberwolves Round 1)

Les Suns vont-ils se brûler les ailes ou mieux renaître comme le Phoenix ? C’est la question à un million et quelques dollars en plus dans le Wild West. La régularité pour la franchise de l’Arizona est précieuse mais se fait rare, et on l’attend parfois en vain, un peu comme l’eau dans le désert. Toute la saison on a eu droit à Dr Jekyll et Mr Hyde, avec une équipe capable du meilleur comme du pire, avec bien trop souvent le pire mais des éclats étincelants dans le meilleur. L’équation est simple. Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, Bradley Beal. Avec ces trois-là, s’ils arrivent à trouver un équilibre et à se mobiliser défensivement, les Suns ont tout pour briller avec une des meilleures équipes de la ligue. Mais cette équipe ne semble parfois pas concernée, pas motivée…pour quelles raisons, nul ne le sait vraiment. Maintenant vient le moment des play-offs, et on espère pour eux que les problèmes ont été réglés. Si la machine s’enraye, elle aura du mal à être réparée, mais si elle commence à prendre de la vitesse…disons qu’il vaudrait mieux ne pas se trouver en travers de leur chemin.

Los Angeles Lakers (7ème, vs Nuggets Round 1)

Il était une fois dans l’Ouest… LeBron James. A 39 ans, on assiste peut-être à l’une des dernières saisons du King. Et si les grands sportifs de notre monde semblent parfois éternels, lui est bien conscient que le temps est compté. Il sera donc de la partie même s’il aura fallu passer par le play-in. Peut-il, accompagné de ses coéquipiers, graver d’autres lettres de noblesse dans le livre de sa légende ? Rien n’est moins sûr… Pourquoi ? Entre l’année précédente et cette année, les Lakers n’ont pas tant changé, et ils vont affronter dès le premier tour les champions en titre. L’année dernière, lors de la finale de la conférence Ouest, ils avaient été balayés, dominés, impuissants. 4-0, au revoir merci, les Nuggets avaient un titre à aller chercher. Les Lakers ont-ils de quoi faire pencher la balance en leur faveur cette fois ? Ils répondront que les matches étaient serrés, que LeBron James n’est plus à un coup de génie près, qu’Austin Reaves a progressé, qu’Anthony Davis est toujours énorme. L’exploit est possible. Mais la teneur de l’affrontement se trouve dans ce mot : exploit.

New Orleans Pelicans (8ème, vs Thunder Round 1)

Certainement pas le bon, on n'irait pas jusqu'à la brute, peut-être le truand ?

On mentirait si on disait que l'on n'est pas au moins un petit peu déçu de ne pas retrouver les Warriors de Steph Curry ou les Sacramento Kings, révélation de la saison 2022-2023 à la huitième place à l'Ouest, mais New Orleans a amplement mérité sa place en play-offs. L'équipe a tout d'abord failli réussir à venir à bout des Lakers, mais n'a pas réussi à finir le travail dans les dernières minutes. Ils ont surtout perdus Zion Williamson sur blessure cette nuit là. Malgré cela, ils ont composté leur billet pour ces play-offs en dominant les Kings, sans leur star. Brandon Ingram, C.J McCollum, Trey Murphy, Jonas Valanciunas et Cie ont fait le job pour s'imposer une sixième fois face à une équipe qu'ils avaient battus pas moins de cinq fois sur cinq cette année. Pour la suite...tout dépend de la santé de Zion, touché aux ischo-jambiers et de quand il sera de retour. Car même avec lui, battre le Thunder ne serait pas aisé, alors sans...L'horizon semble quelque peu bouché.

Alors les prédictions de Sportsailevaison pour ce premier tour à l’Ouest ?

Thunder-Pelicans  : Oklahoma s’impose 4-1 vs Pelicans.

Nuggets-Lakers : Denver domine les Lakers 4-1.

Wolves-Suns : 4-3 pour les Wolves avec un slam dunk pour gagner le match d’Ant-man au game 7.

Clippers-Mavericks : Les Mavs gagnent 4-2, Luka met un buzzer beater pour gagner un des matches.

Les Denver Nuggets remportent leur conférence et disputent les finales NBA pour tenter de s’offrir un repeat.

Au pays du soleil levant, un trèfle s’envole, porté par le vent de l’est.

Boston Celtics (1er, vs Heat Round 1)

Les Boston Celtics s’avancent en immenses favoris de ce côté du tableau.

La raison ? Une saison régulière dominée de la tête et des épaules, 64 victoires et 18 petites défaites. Monumental. La machine est huilée, l’addition de Jrue Holiday et Kristaps Porziņģis à un effectif déjà bien complet leur a encore fait passer un cap. Après avoir échoué en finale en 2022, serait-ce la bonne année pour Jayson Tatum et Jaylen Brown ? JT semble arriver à maturité, et qui dans l’Est peut bien prétendre être mieux armé pour aller chercher le trophée ? Le seul point noir, c’est peut-être le manque de références du coach Joe Mazzulla. L’année dernière, dans les play-offs, notamment face au Heat, ce ne fut pas parfait de ce côté, mais au vu de comment la saison régulière s’est déroulée, cela semble être du passé.  A lui et ses hommes de confirmer.

New York Knicks (2ème, vs Sixers Round 1)

Les Knicks partent au combat. Privés de Julius Randle, ils ont tout de même réussi à finir deuxième à l’Est, bien plus haut que là où on les attendait. La raison tient à un nom, celui d’un preux chevalier. Jalen Brunson. A l’image de son équipe, ce n’est pas le plus aérien des stars de la NBA, tout n’a pas toujours l’air facile, mais quelle énergie, quel caractère, quelle force de volonté. Le meneur des Knicks s’est invité à la table ronde des très grands cette année et ne fera pas de complexes dans sa quête du Graal. Compte tenu de sa production, les Knicks peuvent rêver grand. Mais peut-on aller loin dans le tournoi en étant aussi dépendant d’une individualité ? Aller loin est une vraie possibilité, en revanche le gagner ? La probabilité est bien moins élevée.     

Milwaukee Bucks (3ème, vs Pacers, Round 1)

Alors, c’est quoi le problème, docteur ?

Parlons peu, parlons bien. Ou s’il faut le dire à l’américaine : « let’s keep it a buck ». Pour résumer la saison de Milwaukee, il suffit d’un mot : « Décevante ». Après l’acquisition de Damian Lillard, les espoirs étaient grands. Le retour sur terre fut brutal. Une équipe totalement désemparée, catastrophique défensivement, qui a dû se séparer de son coach à la mi-saison, pour le remplacer par nul autre que Doc Rivers, sur les conseils de… leur consultant, Doc Rivers. Ce même Doc Rivers, après avoir pris ses fonctions d’entraîneur, s’est très vite rappelé au bon souvenir de ses récentes années à Philadelphie, n’hésitant pas à porter le blâme sur ces joueurs et même sur le « travel crew ». Il semble tout de même y avoir du mieux, mais c’est encore loin d’être parfait et les Bucks font figure de tigre de papier, de colosse aux pieds d’argiles. Les contre-performances de fin de saison n’ont vraiment pas rassuré et en plus de cela, la star de la franchise Giannis Antetokounmpo s’est blessée récemment et devrait manquer le début des play-offs.

Pas idéal au moment d’affronter des Pacers avec qui les matches ont souvent été tendus et 4 fois sur 5 en faveur d’Indiana cette année. Khris Middleton pourrait être le facteur X de cette équipe, et le potentiel est réel. A l’heure actuelle, personne ne serait surpris de les voir achever cet exercice 2023-2024 sur une autre fausse note. A eux de bien jouer et prouver le contraire au reste de la planète NBA. « It’s Dame Time ! » ou peut-être pas cette année ?

Cleveland Cavaliers (4ème , vs Magic Round 1)

Serait-ce cavalier d’attendre de grandes choses de Cleveland pour ces play-offs ? Eliminés par les Knicks 4-1 dès le premier tour l’année passée, Donovan Mitchell et les siens avaient pourtant de nombreux arguments. Cette année, l’équipe a en plus à sa disposition des joueurs expérimentés, comme Max Strus, qui avait été essentiel dans la campagne 2023 du Heat. Evan Mobley, Darius Garland, Jarret Allen étaient tous les trois déjà de la partie l’année dernière. En temps normal, la question serait : « Qu’ont-ils appris et ont-ils progressés ? » Cependant, au vu de ce à quoi ressemblait l’infirmerie tout au long de la saison, on se demande plus qui va jouer et si les soucis physiques vont bien finir par les laisser tranquilles.  La bonne nouvelle, c’est qu’ils entament ce premier round contre une équipe jeune et inexpérimentée, alors prêts pour une série de cape et d’épée ?

Orlando Magic (5ème, vs Cavaliers Round 1)

Personne ne les attendait là si vite, mais le Magic, les cartes en mains, a sorti un lapin du chapeau. Le chapeau bas, qui va, bien sûr, à Paolo Banchero, 21 ans, auteur d’une saison remarquable (22.6 points, 6.9 rebonds, 5.4 passes par match et 45.5% d’efficacité au tir). A la baguette, on retrouve Jalen Suggs, 22 ans et pour les accompagner Franz Wagner (22 ans ainsi que son frère « Mo », 26 ans en sortie de banc), Gary Harris (29 ans) qui fait presque figure de vétéran tant l’équipe est jeune et Wendell Carter Jr (25 ans), sans oublier Jonathan Isaac et autres Cole Anthony. Joe Ingles, 36 ans est le seul joueur de l’effectif né avant 1990 et la moyenne d’âge est d’environ 24 ans et demi. C’est même plus choquant, lui et Gary Harris sont les deux seuls à être nés avant 1995. Comme dirait Kylian Mbappé « tu ne me parles pas d’âge ». Le Magic a produit du basket de qualité durant toute la saison et ne fait pas de complexe. Le talent, la force et l’insouciance d’une équipe qui a déjà accompli bien plus que prévu et n’a rien à prouver en font un sérieux danger pour ceux qui doivent les affronter. Ils n’ont rien à perdre et tout à gagner, à eux d’en profiter.

Indiana Pacers (6ème, vs Bucks Round 1)

Vous voulez du spectacle ? Des paniers à tout va ? Un rythme effréné ? Bienvenu à un match classique d’Indiana. On ne voudrait pas trop caricaturer, mais les Pacers ont décidé que la défense, c’était surcoté, et qu’on gagnait en marquant plus de points que l’adversaire. Si vous préférez les chiffres aux mots, 125 points marqués en moyenne par match devrait vous donner une idée. Et qui de mieux, pour aller marquer des paniers, que Tyrese Haliburton ? Après un début d’exercice époustouflant, le meneur de la franchise a ralenti le rythme à la suite d’une blessure, mais s’il parvient à retrouver son niveau de début d’exercice lors de ces playoffs, on pourrait bien voir les Pacers s’inviter à la discussion très sérieusement. Ajoutez à cela Pascal Siakam, Myles Turner et un T.J Mc Connel excellent en sortie de banc, et vous avez de très sérieux arguments. Le point noir, c’est qu’en général, pour gagner en play-offs, il faut aussi bien savoir défendre. En sont-ils capables ? Ou ont-ils tant d’atouts offensifs que peu importe ? L’avenir nous le dira, mais on a très hâte de les retrouver face au Milwaukee Bucks, d’autant plus que les chamaillades entre les deux équipes continuent. Pour ceux qui ne seraient pas au courant, Haliburton avait copié la célébration de Dame Lillard après avoir éliminé les Bucks du « In-season tournament », puis Giannis Antetokounmpo n’avait pas pu récupérer le ballon du match du 14 Décembre dans lequel il avait inscrit 64 points et où les Bucks s’étaient imposées, ballon apparemment donné à Oscar Tshiebwe par les Pacers pour ses premiers points en NBA, et récemment, Malik Beasley, joueur des Bucks a réitéré que ce qui allait se passer lors de la série « ne serait pas joli pour eux (Indiana) »…sortez le pop-corn !

Philadelephia 76ers (7ème, vs Knicks Round 1)

Une saison en deux temps pour Philly. La première partie où la deuxième place à l’Est leur semblait promise, compte tenu du niveau stratosphérique de Joel Embiid, qui aurait sans doute empoché le trophée de MVP s’il avait pu continuer sur sa lancée…et puis, patatras. Le 30 Janvier dernier, le genou part en vrac. Terrible. Et pour les Sixers, un seul être vous manque et tout est dépeuplé. Malgré un Tyrese Maxey exceptionnel, c’est la descente aux enfers et au classement pour Philadelphia, qui ne parvient plus à gagner. Mais Embiid se fait opérer, travaille, et revient, pas à 100%, mais juste à temps. Les Sixers n’ont pas pu éviter le play-in et étaient à un cheveu de perdre contre Miami et de devoir battre Chicago pour se coltiner Boston dès le premier tour, et puis Nicolas Batum a enfilé sa cape de super-héros. « Batman » a dégainé les trois points, puis s’est envolé pour claquer un contre magistral sur un tir de Tyler Herro et permettre aux Sixers de s’imposer d’un souffle 105-104.

 Avec une équipe complète, bien équilibrée, la puissance d’Embiid, la vitesse de Maxey et l’expérience de vétérans comme Batum ou Lowry, les 76ers sont peut-être les mieux armés à l’Est pour tenter de terrasser Boston. Pour cela, il faut d’abord battre les Knicks, ce qui n’aura rien de facile, et espérer pouvoir retrouver un Joel Embiid à 100% de ses capacités. La course contre la montre est enclenchée.

Miami Heat (8ème, vs Celtics Round 1)

Sans faire de langue de bois, cette année, "Playoff Jimmy" ne sera malheureusement pas "a thing". Le Miami Heat, un peu comme les Cleveland Cavaliers, a eu son lot de tourments et de blessures, et la dernière n'est pas la moindre, puisque Jimmy Butler, la star de la franchise, a subi une entorse du genou lors du premier match de play-in contre les Sixers et est indisponible pour plusieurs semaines.

Il faut dire que Miami aime ne pas se rendre la tâche facile. L'année dernière, ils avaient tout pour s'éviter cela mais étaient passés par le play-in et par un trou de souris, pour finir 8ème en dominant les Chicago Bulls, avant de défier le n°1 à l'Est, et petit à petit, se hisser jusqu'aux finales NBA. Cette année, il fallait battre les Pacers pour prendre une option sur les play-offs...raté, de peu. Puis battre les Sixers pour ne pas avoir à disputer le second match de play-in couperet et

avoir à affronter Boston dès le 1er round en cas de victoire. Match perdu, 105-104 dans les dernières minutes.

Alors bis repitita, c'était écrit en lettres de destinée, le Heat domine les Bulls dans un "win or go home game", comme en 2023, pour aller défier le numéro 1 à l'Est, comme en 2023, mais sans Jimmy Butler, pas comme en 2023.

Leurs chances de terrasser l'ogre Celtics sont extrêmement minces, mais elles ont le mérite d'exister.

Cela passera par des performances majuscules des espoirs Jović et Jaime Jaquez Jr., et notamment par la production offensive du second, qui était excellent en début de saison, mais s'est pris le "rookie wall" de plein fouet. Au vu de sa performance face aux Bulls, il semble peut-être être retrouvé. En facteurs X, on aurait pu citer les habituels Adebayo, Herro, et Duncan Robinson, mais devant les ennuis et les problèmes répétés, à la mi-saison, le Heat a bougé. Exit Kyle Lowry, bonjour Terry Rozier, en espérant qu'il puisse créer cette étincelle offensive qui leur manquait.

Cependant, à l'heure d'affronter un géant, serait-ce assez? Probablement pas. Il faudrait un miracle pour voir David vaincre Goliath. "No Jimmy, no party ?", sans doute, mais on connaît assez les Floridiens pour savoir que le Heat compte bien tout faire pour être de la partie.

Les prédictions de Sportsailevaison pour cette campagne à l'Est pour terminer ?

Celtics-Heat : Victoire des Celtics 4-2, au terme d'une série bien plus disputée que prévu

Knicks-Sixers : Après un combat acharné, les Sixers s'imposent 4-3, avec un immense Maxey au Game 7

Bucks-Pacers : Les Pacers remportent la série 4-1, Haliburton donne le ballon du cinquième match à Giannis et achète une montre, avec en inscription gravée "Tyrese Time", qu'il offre à Damian Lillard, pour se faire pardonner de les avoir éliminés. On rigole, bien sûr.

Cavaliers-Magic : Le Magic passe au tour suivant en battant les Cavaliers 4-2 sur la série.

Les Celtics remportent la conférence Est, et s'inclinent contre Denver en finales NBA.

Bien sûr, tous ces pronostics ne sont que l'avis très subjectif de l'auteur de ces lignes, qui n'est qu'à moitié convaincu de plus de la moitié de ces prédictions et il est quasiment assuré qu'il s'est beaucoup trompé, il est cependant toujours amusant de se prêter au jeu. Et pour vous, quels sont les favoris et quelle série du premier round avez-vous le plus hâte de regarder ?

Est, Ouest. 16 équipes. Des moments de magie, d'espoir, des éclats de rêves brisés. Des déceptions, des révélations, des étincelles dans une constellation d'étoiles. Des moments de tension, de stupéfaction, d'exultation. Un western moderne. Une montagne à gravir, et le reste. L'ascension de l'Everest du basket commence maintenant. Rendez-vous at the summit

This is it. The best basketball moment of the year. The play-offs. And while unfortunately we won't be seeing Wemby the alien (not yet, but it won't be long), this 2024 edition has everything to be memorable. Between the West, where all the teams seem to be stronger than each other, and the East, where the Celtics have dominated the regular season head and shoulders and are advancing like behemoths, the excitement is at its peak. 16 teams. Only one champion. Let's take a look at each of them.

First, let's see how the west can be won.

Denver Nuggets (2nd regular season, vs Lakers Round 1)

At the top of the mountain, a mile above sea level, is Denver. It's impossible not to start this list with the Nuggets, who could well make mincemeat of their opponents. Michael Malone's men are defending champions and have more than one ace up their sleeve. Led by the Joker, two-time MVP, exceptional passer, unstoppable player, the Denver Nuggets count in addition to Nikola Jokić in their arsenal of the starting 5 Jamal Murray, KCP and Michael Porter Jr without forgetting Aaron Gordon... frightening enough. A polished collective, individualities capable of shining at any moment, the experience of having already made the ascent, an excellent coach...not forgetting the bench that allows them to do things differently (and the public to feast their eyes on Christian Braun's intensity and posters).

In the West, they would prefer nothing new. So, are we in for a repeat?

Oklahoma City Thunder (1st regular season, vs Pelicans Round 1)

The thunder rumbles, the lightning strikes, and never twice in the same place would the Oklahoma City Thunder answer to that. A collective team, well-built and well-managed, with many assets for the future, we suspected that OKC would rise to power. And they for sure did, finishing first. Yes, first. Ahead of Denver, Minnesota and all the other franchises with far more experienced squads. But do you really need experience when you've got the talent of SGA, this year's MVP candidate, Chet Holmgren, who will finish second behind the extraterrestrial Wemby as best rookie and other Jaylen Williams and Co. To finish first in the regular season, that's apparently more than enough. And for the play-offs? It seems more complicated, but we wouldn't be surprised. And if it's not for this year...let's just say that given the team's current level and what's in store for the future, there's a word being whispered with apprehension by other franchises... did you say "Dynasty?"

Minnesota Timberwolves (3rd place in the regular season, vs Suns Round 1)

In Minnesota, the Wolves are hungry, they have the munchies. Like Anthony Edwards, who delights us every night with his joy of the game, his desire to win and his shocking highlights, or Rudy Gobert, who will finish as defensive player of the year and dominates the paint. The meal is served. Karl-Anthony Towns has finished licking his wounds and Naz Reid could well be 6th Man of the Year. So much for the individual awards. The wolves hunt as a pack, and they've smelled the blood. If the Thunder have all the time in the world to go for a title in the next few years, for this version of Minnesota, the time may well be now...or never. Timber. When it's time to lift mountains or cut down the tree that hides the forest, the franchise is at a crossroads, oblivion or success. Bad news for them, the team is great, but is it superior to the Denver Nuggets or even the Thunder? That's just the author's opinion, but the Timberwolves seem a cut below those two. An outsider in the wild west? Yes, a really serious one with fangs...but not the only sharp shooter in the region.

Los Angeles Clippers (4th place in the regular season, vs Mavericks Round 1)

The old timers of the West. Kawhi Leonard, Paul George, James Harden. Russell Westbrook off the bench. These names should sound familiar. If not, here are their accolades: two-time champion, two-time Finals MVP for the first, 9-time NBA All Star for the second, the third was MVP of the season in 2018, and the fourth had won that same distinction the season before. In short, a lot of experience, a sea of talent. Tyronn Lue's men would be huge favorites...if they were a few years younger. No one doubts what they can produce on the court. As for keeping their most important players on the floor healthy...the question deserves to be asked. At their best, the LA Clippers can beat any team, and it would be wrong to underestimate the old buccaneers. But how often will they be at full strength during this play-off campaign? Nobody knows, and for them more than anyone else, that's the key to success.

Dallas Mavericks (5th in the regular season, vs Clippers Round 1)

Last year, nobody believed it and it didn't work. This year, it seems that the symbiosis has been found. So good luck stopping them. While there are many offensively gifted players in the league, can we do better in the field than the Luka Dončić-Kyrie Irving tandem? Probably not, and the Mavericks intend to create chaos and upset the established order. We wouldn't want to boil a team down to two individualities, but when you know what this infernal duo is capable of, the rest is almost a matter of detail. Get ready to see opposing defences bang their heads on the wall, trying their best, giving it their all, only to see the ball curl into the inside of the net, and then wonder..." But...did Luka really take that contested shot? But...He really made that contested shot! That's not how it's supposed to work!". Putting the ball in the basket is one thing, but don't worry about them, they know how to pass it too, and in important moments, they won't be the ones shaking or hiding.

Now they'll have to perform and repeat their exploits, game after game. The question is : if Luka or Kyrie have a bad (or not so good) day, who else in this squad is going to step up to the mark and save them? That's probably why they're limited.

Phoenix Suns (6th, vs Timberwolves Round 1)

Will the Suns burn their wings or be reborn as a Phoenix? That's the fistful dollar question and for a few more of those, make it the million-dollar question in the Wild West. Consistency for the Arizona franchise is precious but in short supply, and we sometimes wait for it in vain, a bit like water in the desert. All season long, we've been treated to Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, with a team capable of the best and the worst, far too often with the worst but with sparkling dazzling flashes of the best. The equation is simple. Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, Bradley Beal. With these three, if they can find a balance and mobilize defensively, the Suns have everything to shine with one of the league's best teams. But this team sometimes seems unconcerned, unmotivated...for what reasons, no one really knows. Now it's playoffs time, and we hope for their sake that the problems have been sorted out. If the machine jams, it'll be hard to fix, but if it starts to pick up speed...let's just say it'd be better not to get in their way.

Los Angeles Lakers (7th, vs Nuggets Round 1)

Once upon a time in the West...LeBron James. At 39, we may be witnessing one of the King's last seasons. And while the great athletes of our world sometimes seem to live forever, he is well aware that time is running out. So he'll be there, even if he had to go through the play-in. Will he and his teammates be able to etch further letters of nobility in the book of his legend? Nothing is less certain... Why? Between last year and this one, the Lakers haven't changed that much, and they'll be facing the defending champions in the first round.

Last time around, in the Western Conference Finals, they were swept aside, dominated, powerless. 4-0, bye-bye thanks, the Nuggets had a title to go get.

They'll answer that the games were close, that LeBron James is no stranger to a stroke of genius, that Austin Reaves has improved, that Anthony Davis is still huge. The feat is possible. But the essence of the confrontation lies in this word: exploit.

New Orleans Pelicans (8th in the West, vs Thunder Round 1)

Certainly not the good - wouldn't go as far as bad, maybe settle for the ugly ?

We'd be lying if we said we weren't at least a little disappointed not to find the Curry Warriors or the Sacramento Kings, revelation of the 2022-2023 season, in eighth place in the West, but New Orleans has absolutely earned its place in the playoffs. The team came close to overcoming the Lakers, but couldn't finish the job in the final minutes of their first play-in game. They mainly lost Zion Williamson to injury that night. Despite this, they clinched their ticket to the play-offs by dominating the Kings, without the help of their star player. Brandon Ingram, C.J McCollum, Trey Murphy, Jonas Valanciunas and Co. did the job to earn a sixth victory over a team they had beaten no less than five times out of five this year. As for the future... it all depends on the health of Zion, who has a hamstring injury, and on when he'll be back.

Because even with him, beating the Thunder wouldn't be easy, so without him...the horizon seems rather cloudy.

So, what are Sportsailevaison's predictions for the first round in the West?

Thunder-Pelicans: Oklahoma wins 4-1 vs Pelicans.

Nuggets-Lakers: Denver dominates the Lakers 4-1.

Wolves-Suns: 4-3 for the Wolves with an Ant-man game-winning slam dunk in game 7.

Clippers-Mavericks: Mavs win 4-2, Luka drills in a buzzer beater to win one of the games.

The Denver Nuggets win their conference and play in the NBA Finals for a repeat.

In the country of the rising sun, a shamrock levitates, blown away by the easterly wind.

Boston Celtics (1st, vs Heat Round 1)

The Boston Celtics are huge favorites on this side of the draw.

The reason? A regular season dominated head and shoulders, with 64 wins and only 18 defeats. Monumental. The machine is well-oiled, and the addition of Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porziņģis to an already well-rounded roster has taken them to another level. After failing to reach the finals in 2022, could this be the right year for Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown? JT seems to be coming of age, and who in the East can claim to be better equipped to go for the trophy? The only downside may be coach Joe Mazzulla's lack of credentials. Last year, in the playoffs, particularly against the Heat, it wasn't perfect, but given the way the regular season went, that seems to be in the past. It's up to him and his men to confirm this.

New York Knicks (2nd, vs Sixers Round 1)

The Knicks go to war. Without Julius Randle, they still managed to finish second in the East, much higher than expected.

The reason lies in one name, that of a valiant knight. Jalen Brunson. Like his team, he's not the most aerial of NBA stars, and things don't always look easy, but what energy, what character, what strength of will. The Knicks point guard has invited himself to the round table of the greats this year, and will make no bones about it in his quest for the Holy Grail. Given his output, the Knicks can dream big. But can you go far in the tournament when you're so dependent on one individual? Going far is a real possibility, but winning it? That's far less likely.

Milwaukee Bucks (3rd, vs Pacers, Round 1)

So, what's the problem, Doctor?

Simple talk, real talk. Or let's keep it a buck. Milwaukee's season can be summed up in one word: "Disappointing". After the acquisition of Damian Lillard, hopes were high. But the reality check was brutal. A team in total disarray, defensively catastrophic, which had to part ways with its coach mid-season, replacing him with none other than Doc Rivers, on the advice of... their consultant, Doc Rivers. This same Doc Rivers, after taking up his coaching duties, was quick to remind us of his recent years in Philadelphia, not hesitating to lay the blame on his players and even on the "travel crew". Despite this, there does seem to be some improvement, but it's still far from perfect, and the Bucks look like a paper tiger, a colossus with feet of clay. Their late-season underachievement hasn't been reassuring, and on top of that, franchise star Giannis Antetokounmpo was recently injured and is expected to miss the start of the play-offs.

Not ideal when facing the Pacers, with whom matches have often been tense and 4 times out of 5 in Indiana's favor this year. Khris Middleton could be this team's X-factor, and the potential is real. Right now, no one would be surprised to see them end the 2023-2024 season on another false note. It's up to them to play well and prove the rest of the NBA world wrong. "It's Dame Time", or maybe not this year?

Cleveland Cavaliers (4th, vs Magic Round 1)

Would it be cavalier to expect great things from Cleveland in these playoffs? Eliminated 4-1 by the Knicks in the first round last year, Donovan Mitchell and his team had a lot to live up to. This year, the team also has experienced players at its disposal, such as Max Strus, who was essential to the Heat's 2023 campaign. Evan Mobley, Darius Garland and Jarret Allen were all part of last year's squad. Normally, the question would be, "What have they learned and how have they progressed?" However, given what the injury room has looked like all season, it's more a question of who's going to play and whether physical worries will eventually leave them alone.

The good news is that they start this first round against a young, inexperienced team, so, ready for a cloak-and-dagger series?

Orlando Magic (5th, vs Cavaliers Round 1)

Nobody expected them to get there so quickly, but the Magic, with their cards in hand, pulled a rabbit out of the hat. The hat tipped, of course, to 21-year-old Paolo Banchero, author of a remarkable season (22.6 points, 6.9 rebounds, 5.4 assists per game and 45.5% shooting efficiency). At the helm is 22-year-old Jalen Suggs, accompanied by Franz Wagner (22 and his brother "Mo", 26, off the bench), Gary Harris (29), almost a veteran given the team's youth, and Wendell Carter Jr (25), not forgetting Jonathan Isaac and Cole Anthony. Joe Ingles, 36, is the only player in the squad born before 1990, and the average age is around 24 and a half. Even more shocking, Ingles and Gary Harris are the only two players born before 1995. As Kylian Mbappé would say, "You don't talk to me about age". The Magic have been producing quality basketball all season and have no complexes. The talent, strength and fearlessness of a team that has already accomplished much more than expected and has nothing to prove make them a serious danger to those who have to face them. They have nothing to lose and everything to gain, so it's up to them to make the most of it.

Indiana Pacers (6th, vs Bucks Round 1)

You want a show? Baskets at the ready? Fast-paced action? Welcome to a classic Indiana game. We don't want to caricature too much, but the Pacers have decided that defense is overrated, and that you win by scoring more points than the opposition. If you prefer numbers to words, 125 points scored per game on average should give you an idea. And who better to go out and score baskets than Tyrese Haliburton? After a stunning start to the year, the franchise's point guard has slowed down due to injury, but if he can get back to his early form in these playoffs, we could well see the Pacers invite themselves into the discussion in earnest. Add to that Pascal Siakam, Myles Turner and an excellent T.J Mc Connel off the bench, and you've got some very serious arguments. The downside is that, in general, to win in the playoffs, you also need to be able to defend well. Can they? Or do they have so many offensive assets that it doesn't matter? Time will tell, but we can't wait to see them against the Milwaukee Bucks, especially as the squabbles between the two teams continue.

For those who don't know, Haliburton copied Dame Lillard's celebration after eliminating the Bucks from the "In-season Tournament", and then Giannis Antetokounmpo couldn't get the ball from the December 14 game in which he scored 64 points and the Bucks won, a ball apparently given to Oscar Tshiebwe by the Pacers for his first NBA points. Recently, Bucks player Malik Beasley reiterated that what was going to happen in the series "wouldn't be pretty for them (Indiana)"... get the popcorn ready!

Philadelphia 76ers (7th, vs Knicks Round 1)

A two-part season for Philly. In the first half, second place in the East seemed a given, given the stratospheric level of Joel Embiid, who would undoubtedly have claimed the MVP trophy had he been able to keep up the momentum...and then, all hell broke loose. On January 30, his knee gave out. Terrible. And for the Sixers, just one person missing and it feels like the whole world is gone. Despite an exceptional Tyrese Maxey, Philadelphia went straight to hell, plummeting in the standings, unable to win anymore. But Embiid underwent surgery, worked, and came back, not at 100%, but just in time. The Sixers couldn't avoid a play-in game and were a whisker away from losing to Miami and having to beat Chicago to take on Boston in the first round, and then Nicolas Batum donned his superhero cape. "Batman" made the three-pointers rain, then soared to slam a masterful block on Tyler Herro's shot to give the Sixers a breathtaking 105-104 victory.

With a complete, well-balanced team, the power of Embiid, the speed of Maxey and the experience of seasoned veterans like Batum and Lowry, the 76ers are perhaps the best equipped in the East to try and take down Boston. To do so, they must first beat the Knicks, which won't be easy, and hope to get Joel Embiid back to 100%. The time trial has begun.

Miami Heat (8th, vs Boston Round 1)

Without making any bones about it, "Playoff Jimmy" will unfortunately not be "a thing" this time around. The Miami Heat, much like the Cleveland Cavaliers, have had their share of torments and injuries, the last one, not the least of which. Jimmy Butler, the franchise's star player, suffered a sprained knee in the first play-in game against the Sixers and is unavailable for several weeks.

It has to be said that Miami don't like to make things easy for themselves.

Last year, they had everything to avoid this, but still went through the play-in and somehow threaded the needlee, to finish 8th by dominating the Chicago Bulls, before challenging the n°1 team in the East, and step by step, victory after victory, managed to reach the NBA Finals.

This year, they needed to beat the Pacers to put themselves in contention for a direct play-off berth... a narrow miss. Then they had to beat the Sixers to avoid having to play the second play-in game and facing Boston in round 1 if they won. Game lost, 105-104 in the final minutes.

So bis repitita, it was written in letters of destiny, the Heat dominated the Bulls in a "win or go home game", as in 2023, to go and challenge the number 1 seed in the East, as in 2023, but without Jimmy Butler, not as in 2023.

Their chances of toppling the Celtic ogre are extremely slim, but they have the merit of existing.

This will hinge on majestic performances from prospects Jović and Jaime Jaquez Jr. and, in particular, the offensive production of the latter, who was excellent at the start of the season, but crashed into the "rookie wall" with full force. In view of his performance against the Bulls, he may be back on track. As X-factors, we could have mentioned the usual suspects : Adebayo, Herro and Duncan Robinson, but faced with repeated troubles and problems, at mid-season the Heat made a move. Gone is Kyle Lowry, hello Terry Rozier, and the hope is that he can create that offensive spark they've been missing.

But when it comes to taking on a giant, would that be enough? Probably not. It would take a miracle to see David defeat Goliath. "No Jimmy, no party?", rather likely, but we know the Floridians well enough to know that the Heat intend to do everything in their power to be in the game.

Celtics-Heat: Celtics win 4-2, in a series that was much more competitive than expected.

Knicks-Sixers : After a hard-fought battle, the Sixers win 4-3, with a huge Maxey performance in Game 7

Bucks-Pacers: The Pacers win the series 4-1, Haliburton gives the Game 5 ball to Giannis and buys a watch, engraved with the caption "Tyrese Time", which he gives to Damian Lillard, to apologize for eliminating them. We're kidding, of course.

Cavaliers-Magic: The Magic move on to the next round, beating the Cavaliers 4-2 in the series.

The Celtics win the Eastern Conference, and lose to Denver in the NBA Finals.

Of course, all these predictions are only the very subjective opinion of the author of these lines, who is only half convinced of more than half of them and is almost certain to be proven very wrong multiple times, but it's always fun to play the game.
