Sinner, l’œil du tigre!

“Excuse me, preacher…you got time for a Sinner?”. Les mots inquiétants, menaçants, d’Arvin Russell dans « Le Diable, Tout le Temps » avant d’abattre le monstre se tenant en face de lui dans l’église résonnent en écho comme la détonation du dernier coup droit coup de fusil envoyé par le jeune Italien pour remporter la balle de match, s’offrir le titre et se voir couronner champion de l'Open d’Australie. S’ils n’ont pas grand-chose à voir , le protagoniste du film et notre nouveau champion partagent en revanche un trait en commun : ce regard noir empli de détermination, d’une résolution implacable que nul ne peut stopper. Comme si, après de nombreux thrillers à suspense en cinq sets où il avait jusqu’ici quasiment toujours fini par s’incliner et prendre le rôle du perdant au grand cœur, Jannik Sinner avait décidé de se venger. Et de quelle manière. Par exécution publique et clinique de chacun de ses adversaires.

Il fallait voir ce regard lancé à un Novak Djokovic en perdition-oui vous avez bien lu, Novak Djokovic, l’homme aux 24 Grands Chelem, qui ne perd, pardon, ne perdait jamais en demi-finales de l’Open d’Australie, ce Nole là- ne sachant plus où trouver son tennis, totalement impuissant en demi-finale. Ou cette absence du moindre doute, aucun, au tie-break du deuxième set en quarts de finale contre Rublev, tie-break remporté 7-5 par Sinner alors qu’il était mené 5-1. Et enfin, cette force de conviction face au stratège Medvedev, maître à jouer à faire dérailler, tactiquement parfait et menant cette finale deux sets à zéro, alors que le Russe était en passe de s’obtenir des balles de break quasiment synonymes de victoire. Cette force de conviction, cette confiance en lui qui lui a permis de finalement l’emporter en 5 sets 3-6 3-6 6-4 6-4 6-3, essorant Medvedev au bout d’un combat de 3h44 de match.  « Il y avait quelque chose d'inéluctable à sa victoire, comme si c'était écrit, ce devait être lui. » Voilà ce que nous écrivions, au sujet de Carlos Alcaraz à l’issue de l’US Open 2022, quand il avait battu ce même Sinner au bout d’un duel épique, dantesque, en quarts de finale. Force est de constater, qu’en ce mois de Janvier 2024, la poussière d’étoiles magique accompagnait l’Italien cette fois.

Enfin magique…Si Sinner a passé un cap et est devenu ce monstre mental, force de démolition, il ne le doit qu’à lui-même, à ses expériences passées et son travail pour franchir un palier physique et accomplir son avènement. Comme il le déclarait dans les colonnes d’Eurosport, il n’a peut-être pas le physique pour « Alerte à Malibu » mais il a désormais prouvé qu’il avait celui pour être sacré champion d’Australie. Le talent tennistique était déjà connu, acquis mais ce que Sinner vient de faire est tout simplement monstrueux, extraordinaire. Car en plus d’avoir progressé dans tous les aspects de son jeu, l’Italien a était quasiment parfait sur tout le tournoi, ne perdant qu'un set en demi-finale au tie-break face à Djokovic avant de triompher au terme d'un mano à mano épique en finale. Un premier service de plomb, une qualité de retour anormale, notamment sur seconde balle, une cadence infernale de fond de court, de la variété, notamment avec ses coups d’attaque bombés ou d’occasionnelles montées au filet et toujours ces fameux coups « coups de fusil » dégainés à bon escient, quand il le fallait. Cette capacité à rediriger les attaques, à emmener ses adversaires dans de longs rallyes, ne pas faire la faute, être patient, cette force mentale…tout cela n’est pas sans rappeler un certain…oui vous l’avez deviné, Novak Djokovic, le numéro 1 mondial, épinglé au tableau de chasse, battu à son propre jeu lors du tournoi. Plus qu’impressionnante, la qualité de jeu sur la quinzaine de Sinner a été stratosphérique. Il ne reste plus qu’une question pour le jeune Italien de 22 ans et les « carota boys »…jusqu’où peut-il aller cette année ? A lui de nous le montrer.

Soulignons aussi la performance de Medvedev, qui aura notamment piégé coup-sur-coup Felix Augier Aliassime qui rêvait de résurrection, la révélation du tournoi Nuno Borges, un Hubert Hurckaz servant le feu, ainsi qu’ Alexander Zverev qui venait de dominer Carlos Alcaraz et jouait son meilleur tennis, avant de passer à quelques points de se voir sacré champion, même si Sinner en a décidé autrement. L’échalas dégingandé semble parfois un peu gauche, avec sa gestuelle atypique, mais il est si fort et si précis tactiquement. Il avait expliqué en interview d'après match son retour à 1m, voire 2m de la ligne de fond en huitièmes de finales, le voilà retournant collé à la ligne contre un des serveurs les plus puissants du circuit le tour d’après. Face à Zverev, il est dominé, mais s’appuie sur son service, s’applique à le faire déjouer, rentrer dans sa tête, et trouve une solution. Et en finale, alors que tout le monde s’attend à le voir déployer son style caractéristique de marathonien de fond de court, le voilà qui prend des risques, tente, et vient gagner de nombreux points à la volée, ce qui aura incroyablement déstabilisé pendant plus de deux sets un Sinner qui jusque là n’avait même pas été bousculé. Une autre défaite crève-cœur pour lui, mais une autre finale à son actif et le rappel que le numéro 3 mondial est un joueur à part.

Enfin, du côté français, impossible de ne pas mentionner Arthur Cazaux, 21 ans qui a sorti Rune et fut seulement battu par Hurckaz au bout d’un sacré duel. Il nous aura fait rêver. On ne va pas s’enflammer mais hâte de le retrouver lors des prochains tournois.

Chez les femmes, un tournoi un peu décousu (jusque-là rien de nouveau), qui a vu Sabalenka, surpuissante, obtenir son deuxième Grand Chelem, après avoir gagné…l’Open d’Australie l’année dernière. Sabalenka, Gauff, Swiatek, serait-ce un trio qui va se disputer la couronne de reine du circuit pour les années à venir ?  L’avenir le dira, et en attendant, Sabalenka va profiter d’un trophée bien mérité.

Eye of the tiger, Sinner!

"Excuse me, preacher...you got time for a Sinner?". The ominous words of Arvin Russell in "The Devil, All the Time", before gunning down the monster standing in front of him in the church, echo like the detonation of the final forehand shot sent by the young Italian to win the match point, take the title and be crowned champion of Australian Open. Although they have little in common, the film's protagonist and our new champion do share one trait: that dark, grim look of determination, of implacable resolve that no one can stop. It's as if, after so many five-set thrillers in which he'd almost always ended up on the losing side, Jannik Sinner had decided to take his revenge. And how so. By publicly and clinically executing each and every one of his opponents.

You should have seen the glance he gave to a Novak Djokovic in disarray - yes, you read that right, Novak Djokovic, the man with 24 Grand Slams, who never loses, sorry, never lost in the semi-finals of the Australian Open, that Nole - unable to find his tennis, totally helpless in the semi-finals. Or the absence of the slightest doubt in the tie-break of the second set in the quarter-finals against Rublev, a tie-break won 7-5 by Sinner when trailing 5-1. And last but not least, his sheer strength of belief against the strategist Medvedev, tactically perfect playmaker who led the final two sets to nil, even though the Russian was on the verge of securing break points almost synonymous to victory. This resolve, this belief, this self-confidence, enabled Sinner to win in 5 sets, 3-6 3-6 6-4 6-4 6-3, draining, beating Medvedev after 3 hours 44 minutes of great tennis. "There was something ineluctable about his victory, as if it was written, it had to be him." That's what we wrote about Carlos Alcaraz after the US Open 2022, when he beat the same Sinner in an epic, "dantesque" duel in the quarter-finals. This time around, in January 2024, it was the Italian that was accompanied by magical stardust.

Well, magical...

If Sinner has turned the corner and become this mental monster, this demolition force, he owes it all to himself, his past experiences and his work to take his physique to the next level. As he declared in the columns of Eurosport, he may not have the bodyfor "Baywatch", but he has now proved that he has the one to be crowned Australian champion. The tennis talent was already known and established, but what Sinner has just done is simply monstrous, extraordinary.

As well as having improved in every aspect of his game, the Italian was practically perfect throughout the tournament, losing just one set in the semi-final tie-break to Djokovic before triumphing in an epic "mano à mano" in the final. A killer first serve, an outstanding return quality, especially on the second ball, an infernal pace from the baseline, versatility, notably with his bombed attacking shots or occasional points at volley, and always those famous signature "shotgun" strokes, unleashed at the right moment, when needed. This ability to redirect attacks, to engage his opponents in long rallies, to avoid making a mistake, to be patient, this mental strength... all this is reminiscent of a certain... yes, you guessed it right, Novak Djokovic, the world number 1, trophy pinned to the wall of the tournament, head in the hunting bag, beaten at his own game.

Beyond impressive, the quality of Sinner's play over the fortnight was stratospheric.

Congratulations to him and there's now only one question left for the 22-year-old Italian and the "Carota boys" : how far can he go this year? It's up to him to show us that.

Medvedev's performance is also noteworthy, as he trapped Felix Augier Aliassime, who was dreaming of a resurrection journey, as well as the revelation of the tournament Nuno Borges, then Hubert Hurckaz, who was on fire, and Alexander Zverev, even though the German had just dominated Carlos Alcaraz and was playing his best tennis. After doing all that, Medvedev even came within a few points of being crowned champion, but Sinner decided otherwise. The gangly beanpole may seem a little clumsy at times, with his atypical body gestures, but he's so sharp and tactically precise. He explained in a post-match interview how he would stand back 1m, or even 2m, from the baseline to be able to return effectively in the Round of 16. He is suddenly back glued to the line against one of the most powerful servers on the tour the very next round. Against Zverev, he is dominated, but relies on his serve, works hard to outwit him, gets inside his head, and finds a solution. And in the final, just as everyone was expecting him to deploy his characteristic marathon style from the baseline, here he was, taking risks, trying, and winning many points at the night, which for more than two sets incredibly shook up a Sinner who until then hadn't even been troubled. Another heartbreaking defeat for Medevedeb, but another final to his credit and a reminder that the world number 3 is a player in a class of his own.

Finally, on the French side, it's impossible not to mention Arthur Cazaux, 21, who took out Rune and was only beaten by Hurckaz at the end of a hell of a duel. He made us dream. We're not going to get carried away, but we can't wait to see him again in future tournaments.

On the women's side, a slightly chaotic tournament (so far, nothing new) saw the over-powerful Sabalenka win her second Grand Slam, after winning...the Australian Open last year. Sabalenka, Gauff, Swiatek - could this be the trio who will battle it out for the crown of tour queen for years to come? Time will tell, and in the meantime, Sabalenka will be enjoying a well-deserved trophy.
